Robotic Contest for Innovative Industrial and Metropolitan Applications ( contest page)

Since launching the first robotic contest in 80s we have been witnessing a great progress in robotics education and research in the world. In addition, the edutainment themes of diverse robotic competitions have attracted the interest and attention of a large portion of the population –ranging from preschool to senior citizens- to the robotics technologies and their futuristic applications. As a result, we are witnessing a broad and intensive participation of ordinary people, students, and experts in the robotic competitions. This spectacular phenomenon has proved to be very fruitful in terms of developing hands-on mechatronics capabilities, extending and intensifying the interdisciplinary knowledge and expertise, in addition to teamwork capabilities, self learning, and creativity of the participants. This role of the competitions indeed in long term has an indirect effect on developing applicable robotic systems. On the other hand, a limited number of competitions, like the grand challenge, have proved that a well designed and good motivating competition can be a good platform to energize the robotic community to gather the forces and create technologies that are useful in daily life. Therefore, The Robotic Society of Iran, in cooperation with The Iranian Mechtronics Society, has designed a robotic contest to partially fill in the gap between the existing competitions and the industrial needs to innovative robotic technologies.

In this contest, unlike the existing competitions, participants are involved in problem definition. In the first stage, participants search for proper tasks in the oil, gas and electrical industries, in addition to municipal needs, to be solved or facilitated by robotic and mechatronics systems. Then, each contestant team justifies the impact of using robotic systems for performing the selected task in terms of technological, financial, safety and environmental aspects and proposes a conceptual design of its robotic system. At this stage, a team of juries, composed of experts in the related industry and researchers in the robotics and mechatronics fields, review the proposals and select a set of teams to participate in the final stage of the contest. In the final phase, the participants demonstrate their robotic solutions by simulations or through displaying a mockup. The main prize for the best teams will be grants from the related industries for making a working prototype of the invented robotic systems
